Brandon Backe was placed on waivers Monday by the Astros. (Tony Gutierrez/Associated Press)Houston Astros pitcher Brandon Backe was placed on waivers Monday.
Backe, 31, was waived because he rejected a demotion to the triple-A Round Rock Express.
He will receive the remainder of his $1.5-million US salary in three days and likely become a free agent.
Backe is 31-29 lifetime with a 5.22 earned-run average and a complete-game shutout in 145 appearances (79 starts) since he broke into the major leagues with the Tampa Bay Rays on July 19, 2002.
The veteran right-hander has posted no record this season with a 10.38 ERA in five appearances with Houston, including one start.
He has pitched just 13 innings, permitting 15 runs on 21 hits and six walks with 10 strikeouts.
