Overbay, who batted a major league-best .533 for the week with two home runs and eight runs batted in, is the second Toronto player to win the award in the last month.
Ace pitcher Roy Halladay, who won his major league-leading 10th game of the season on Sunday, won in May and was nominated for last week's honour after tossing two complete games with 20 strikeouts.
Overbay clubbed his seventh homer of the season in Sunday's 4-0 win over visiting Kansas City and his averaging .452 (19-for-42) during the streak with eight doubles and 12 runs batted in.
Other American League nominees included Overbay's teammate Adam Lind, who led the league in hits and doubles last week; Oakland outfielder Matt Holliday, who scored seven runs and drove in nine; and Athletics pitcher Vin Mazzaro, who threw 13 2/3 scoreless innings to begin his major-league career.
Colorado Rockies infielder/outfielder Ian Stewart took home National League honours after batting .480 (12-for-25) with four homers and 12 RBIs.
Other nominees include Cincinnati's Laynce Nix (.321, three homers, eight RBIs) and San Francisco's Randy Johnson, who became the 24th pitcher to reach the 300-win plateau.
