The Oakland Athletics acquired catcher Curtis Thigpen on Friday from the Toronto Blue Jays for a player to be named later or cash.

Thigpen hit just .148 in 14 spring training games for Toronto and was assigned earlier in the week to the club's Triple-A affiliate in Las Vegas.

The Dallas native was selected in the second round by the Blue Jays in the 2004 college draft and has played 57 games in the majors, hitting .227 with one home run and 12 runs batted in.

The Blue Jays also used veteran major league journeymen Michael Barrett, Raul Chavez and prospect J.P. Arencibia at catcher in spring training as expected No. 1 man Rod Barajas was playing for Venezuela at the World Baseball Classic.

Toronto is 10-12 in spring training, taking on Pittsburgh on Friday night.

The Blue Jays will kick off the season on April 6 at home against the Detroit Tigers.
