Minor-league pitchers Jeff Stevens, Chris Archer and John Caub were sent from Cleveland to Chicago in the deal.
The 33-year-old DeRosa was officially listed as a second baseman with Chicago, but is a versatile infielder.
He played six positions with the Cubs last season, including 95 appearances at second base and 22 at third, but could be placed at third base with Cleveland, where they have an opening.
In 149 games last season, he averaged .285, hitting a career-high 21 homeruns and driving in 87 runs.
Over his career he has hit 69 homers and driven in 352 runs with a .279 average.
DeRosa was a seventh-round draft pick by the Atlanta Braves in 1996. He signed with the Chicago Cubs in 2006 as a free agent.
