(Jim McIsaac/Getty Images)New York Mets ace Johan Santana has undergone arthroscopic surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee, just days after pitching a shutout in the penultimate game of the season.
The Mets said Wednesday that Santana, 29, is expected to be ready for spring training.
Right-hander John Maine should also be set for the spring after having arthroscopic surgery performed on his right shoulder Tuesday.
Santana tore his meniscus before his final start of the season. Still, the hard-throwing lefty went out Saturday on three days rest and tossed a complete-game three-hitter against Florida to keep the Mets' playoff hopes alive.
New York lost its final game, giving the National League wild card to Milwaukee.
Santana went 16-7 with a 2.53 ERA in his first season with the Mets. The two-time American League Cy Young winner went to New York in a February blockbuster that sent a package of prospects to Minnesota.
Santana has five years left on the six-year, $137.5-million contract he signed when joining the Mets.
