Canada moved another step closer to clinching a spot at the Beijing Games with an 11-0, mercy-rule win over Spain at the Olympic qualifying tournament Wednesday in Taichung, Taiwan.
Toronto Blue Jays farmhand Aaron Wideman of Mississauga, Ont., threw four shutout innings while Cleveland Indians prospect Nick Weglarz of Stevensville, Ont., homered and knocked in a pair of runs to lead the way.
Canada is tied for second with Taiwan at 4-1 heading into Thursday's matchup with unbeaten South Korea (5-0). A victory against the front-runners or Germany (2-3) on Friday should be enough to clinch one of the three Olympic berths up for grabs.
"I can start to taste it," said Weglarz. "If we can win against Korea that'll take a lot of pressure off and pretty much guarantees our spot [in the Olympics]."
Cincinnati Reds prospect James Avery of Moose Jaw, Sask., is scheduled to start against South Korea.
The Canadians made quick work of the overmatched Spaniards following an emotional and pivotal 6-5, 10-inning win over Taiwan on Monday.
