Matthews, 33, has denied using HGH, but the Times Union of Albany reported that he was shipped HGH by a pharmacy in 2004, the year before it was banned by Major League Baseball.
Several other players, including Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Troy Glaus, have met with league officials over the past few weeks regarding allegations they received performance-enhancing drugs from Signature Pharmacy, a Florida firm under investigation for illegal distribution.
Signature Pharmacy was raided roughly nine months ago by federal authorities, but MLB officials have yet to see the company's client lists, which remain in the possession of Albany District Attorney David Soares.
Matthews hit .252 with 18 home runs, 72 runs batted in, 79 runs scored and 18 stolen bases in 140 games last season.
He is a lifetime .261 hitter with 96 HRs, 387 RBIs, 506 runs and 82 steals in 1,015 games over nine MLB seasons with the San Diego Padres, Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates, New York Mets, Baltimore Orioles, Texas Rangers and Angels.
