New York Yankees manager Joe Torre remained in limbo after team management met Tuesday to decide whether he will return for a 13th season.

The meetings were held at the home of Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, who resides in Tampa, Fla.

"The meetings are adjourned for tonight," Yankees spokesman Howard Rubenstein told reporters at 4 p.m. ET.

"There have been no decisions made, nor will there be any comment today. The meetings will resume tomorrow."

Speculation persists that Torre will be fired as manager of the Yankees, who were eliminated from the playoffs in three games by the Cleveland Indians in the American League Division Series.

It marked New York's third straight opening-round exit, and Steinbrenner hinted Torre would be fired if the Yankees failed to advance.

Torre, the priciest manager in the major leagues at $7 million US annually, has guided the Yankees to the playoffs in each of his 12 seasons at the helm.

Mattingly as manager?

Bench coach Don Mattingly is considered a leading candidate to succeed Torre, who has skippered New York to four World Series titles (1996, 1998-2000).

"If and when a decision is made concerning Joe's future, Don will respond at that time," said Ray Schulte, Mattingly's spokesman.

"In the meantime, he wants what is best for Joe and the Yankee organization."

Also rumoured to be in the running is Yankees broadcaster Joe Girardi, who was named National League manager of the year with the Florida Marlins last season, and Tony La Russa of the St. Louis Cardinals.

La Russa is pondering his future with the Cardinals, who fired general manager Walt Jocketty on Oct. 3.

Jocketty worked with La Russa in the Oakland Athletics organization, and hired him to manage the Cardinals in 1995.

La Russa told the St. Louis Dispatch that he'll wait for a new GM to be hired before deciding whether to return to St. Louis.
