Oakland Athletics pitcher Dan Haren will start in his all-star debut on Tuesday in San Francisco, with Jake Peavy of the San Diego Padres first to take the mound for the National League.

The hurlers were named at a news conference on Monday, with American League manager Jim Leyland of the Detroit Tigers and NL counterpart Tony La Russa of the St. Louis Cardinals also giving their batting orders for the all-star game.

Haren is enjoying a career year, with a 10-3 record and 2.30 earned-run average. The 27-year-old leads the AL in ERA, having given up over three runs in just two of his 19 starts this season.

Peavy, 26, has helped lead the San Diego Padres to the NL West lead at the break. He won nine of his first 10 decisions, with a 16-strikeout performance against Arizona in April in one of the pitching highlights of the first half of the Major League Baseball season.

Peavy leads the NL with 125 strikeouts, with a 9-3 record and 2.19 ERA.

He appeared in the 2005 all-star game, allowing no runs while striking out one of three batters faced.

For the fifth year in a row, the winning league in this year's all-star game will have home field advantage in the World Series. The American League has won nine of the last 10 all-star games, with the other contest ending in a tie in 2002.

Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Russell Martin is the lone Canadian in the starting lineup, with Justin Morneau an AL reserve.

The Detroit Tigers and the New York Mets each have three players in the starting lineup.

With the game taking place in a National League park, Haren may have to step into the batter's box. The former Cardinal is 4-for-53 in his career.
