The Minnesota Twins will be minus one Canadian for the foreseeable future.

Relief pitcher Jesse Crain of Toronto was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a torn rotator cuff and torn labrum in his right (throwing) shoulder.

"It appears to have been there for some time and has worsened recently," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "Jesse will get a second opinion in the next couple of days and we'll go from there."

The injury is more bad news for the Twins, who have lost six of seven, including Wednesday night's 7-1 defeat to the hometown Cleveland Indians.

"He ate up a lot of big innings for us," Gardenhire said Crain, one of the Twins' primary set-up men. "It's a blow. People are going to have to step up."

Crain, 25, gave up six unearned runs, including a two-run homer to Grady Sizemore, in Tuesday's 15-7 loss at Cleveland.

In 18 appearances this season, Crain has a 1-2 record with a 5.51 earned-run average. He endured a tough spring with a 5.00 ERA in eight pre-season outings.

A hard-throwing right-hander, Crain went 4-5 with a 3.25 ERA in 68 appearances in 2006.

He posted a 5.03 ERA in the first half of last season but settled down after the all-star break with an impressive 1.93 ERA in 32 games.

Right-hander Julio DePaula was called up from triple-A Rochester to take Crain's place in the bullpen. He made his major league debut Wednesday night and pitched a scoreless inning.

DePaula was 2-3 with a 3.15 ERA and two saves in 15 appearances for the Red Wings this season.
