Free-agent catcher Rod Barajas won't be coming to Toronto after all, but the Blue Jays have addressed their backstop concerns — agreeing to a two-year, $7.25-million contract with Gregg Zaun.

The deal, which includes an option for a third season, was completed on Monday evening after a pact with Barajas fell apart.

"We came to terms with Gregg Zaun at about midnight," general manager J.P. Ricciardi said at a news conference Tuesday. "Gregg Zaun is our catcher."

Barajas, 31, reportedly was scheduled to fly to Toronto for a physical that would have finalized a two-year, $5.25-million contract with the Blue Jays.

But the Barajas hit a last-minute snag late Monday, leaving Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi scrambling to re-sign Zaun.

The Blue Jays quickly resumed negotiations with Zaun, who was rumoured to have turned down a two-year, $6-million offer from Ricciardi before filing for free agency on Oct. 30.

Zaun, 35, shared the catching chores with Bengie Molina last season, hitting .272 with 11 home runs, 40 runs batted in and 39 runs scored in 99 games.

Toronto opted not to pick up its $7.5-million option on Molina, who received a $500,000 US buyout and became a free agent.

Zaun, a fan favourite and a candid clubhouse leader, is a .253 hitter overall with 62 HRs, 323 RBIs and 320 runs in 918 games over 12 MLB seasons for the Baltimore Orioles, Florida Marlins, Kansas City Royals, Houston Astros, Colorado Rockies and Blue Jays.

Reports suggested he was being pursued by the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants.

The Blue Jays wanted Barajas because they considered him a better defensive player than Molina and Zaun.
