All-star infielder Asdrubal Cabrera and the Cleveland Indians agreed to a one-year, $4.55-million US contract Friday to avoid salary arbitration.

The agreement was $75,000 above the midpoint between the $5.2 million he had asked for in arbitration last month and the $3.75 million the Indians had offered. A hearing had been scheduled for next week.

Cabrera hit .273 with 25 homers, 92 runs batted in and 32 doubles last year while earning $2.125 million.

The Indians have not gone to arbitration since 1991.
