Jeter has no doubt he will return to the New York Yankees this season at the same level that made him one of baseball's most revered players. The shortstop was in pinstripes Thursday when he spoke at Yankee Stadium for the first time about a new fracture that was discovered last week in the ankle he broke during Game 1 of the AL championship series Oct. 13.

The Yankees have said the new injury should push Jeter's return to mid-July. Jeter says he has a date in mind but would not share it because he did not want to disappoint himself or anyone else after failing to be ready for opening day, his original plan.

Jeter is performing limited on-field work at the team's minor league complex in Florida as part of a rehabilitation program for a left ankle injury.

Jeter took five rounds of batting practice on Monday. He also fielded 21 grounders at the normal shortstop position, which was a decreased total from workouts last Wednesday and Friday.

Jeter has resumed on-field hitting after being shut down last month by left ankle soreness.

Jeter took 32 swings in batting practice Wednesday at the Yankees' minor league complex. The 38-year-old superstar also ran for the second consecutive day.

Jeter ran on a field for the first time in several weeks, his biggest steps yet in his comeback from injury.

Jeter hasn't played since March 23, when his left ankle bothered him while running. He was placed on the disabled list on March 31 and there's no timetable on when the 38-year-old will be activated.

Jeter will be sidelined until after the All-Star break because of a new fracture in his injured left ankle

Cashman said the injury to the 38-year-old shortstop "is obviously a setback.'' Jeter could be out at least three months.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman says Jeter probably won't be ready for opening day.

Cashman said Sunday it's "more likely than not'' Jeter will start the regular season on the disabled list because of ankle soreness. Cashman says the Yankees' captain was a little sore Sunday, one day after getting four at-bats as the designated hitter in a minor league exhibition game.

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman says Jeter will play only in minor league spring training games for the rest of spring training.

The move could cut short how much time Jeter would miss if he starts the season on the 15-day disabled list. By not playing in major league exhibitions, the Yankees want to be able to backdate Jeter's start time on the DL if that's necessary.

Jeter was removed from New York's lineup against the Phillies on Tuesday for "precautionary" reasons because his surgically repaired left ankle feels "stiff."

Jeter has mild inflammation of the ankle, a precautionary MRI showed. An X-ray was negative. He was listed as day-to-day.

Jeter says he will play at shortstop Wednesday night against the Philadelphia Phillies.

It's the first time in the field for Jeter since ankle surgery last fall. Jeter says Tuesday after working out in Tampa, Fla., that he'll "be out there" against the Phillies after two games as the designated hitter. Jeter went 0 for 2 Monday in his second game at DH since breaking his left ankle in October. He had a single in two at-bats Saturday.

Jeter is in the starting lineup for the first time Saturday since ankle surgery last fall.

Jeter was listed as the designated hitter in Saturday's spring training game against Atlanta. The 38-year-old broke his left ankle lunging for a grounder in the AL championship series opener against Detroit last Oct. 13 and had surgery a week later.
