Locke remained red-hot as he won his fourth straight decision and gave up one run or fewer for the fifth time in his past eight outings. He struck out four and walked three. In his past six outings, Locke has allowed 21 hits and seven earned runs over 37 innings (1.70 ERA).
After posting a 5.17 ERA through his first three starts, Locke has a 1.50 ERA in four outings since.
Locke (3-1) has worked 13 scoreless innings while allowing five hits his last two starts.
"That's his best big league performance," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said of Locke, who was making his 14th career start. "That was six innings of big league pitching. He made pitches - he flat-out made pitches."
Locke beat out Kyle McPherson, who was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday, and Jeanmar Gomez, who will begin the season in the Pirates' bullpen.
