Texas general manager Jon Daniels said Harrison felt great following the surgery but the Rangers still don't expect him back until after the All-Star break.
Harrison reported some improvement Tuesday but canceled a bullpen session. General manager Jon Daniels said the club didn't want to "compromise his arm by having him fight through it." Harrison is still scheduled to start Thursday in the series opener at Seattle.
Harrison was kept out of on-field team activities Sunday and Monday. His next schedule bullpen session is Tuesday, and the team still expects him to make his next start Thursday at Seattle.
Harrison was tagged for six runs over 5 2-3 innings. He will try to bounce back against the Angels and Josh Hamilton this weekend.
Harrison led Texas starters in wins and ERA last season, finishing 18-11 with a 3.29 ERA. Darvish was 16-9 with a 3.90 ERA and 221 strikeouts in 191 1-3 innings. Veteran right-hander Colby Lewis drew the first start last year, but won't be available until at least May while recovering from elbow surgery. The previous two opening day starters, Scott Feldman and C.J. Wilson, are no longer with the Rangers.
