Cain (3-2, 5.13 ERA) also walked two batters but didn't surrender a home run after giving up three while allowing six runs in his last start.
Cain (2-2, 5.04 ERA) allowed three hits, including Brian McCann's two-run homer, and added an RBI single during a six-run rally in the fourth inning. Cain is 2-0 with a 1.76 ERA in his first two starts this month.
Cain, who pitched six shutout innings against Los Angeles on opening day, gave up one run and five hits in 7 1-3 innings and allowed only one runner past second base to win for the first time since Sept. 26, 2012. He left to a standing ovation from the AT&T Park crowd after issuing a one-out walk in the eighth, then watched from the dugout as five relievers teamed for the final five outs.
Cain, who had allowed nine runs in his previous outing, gave up two runs on seven hits to lower his ERA to 5.94.
