Mathis was acquired November in the trade that sent shortstop Jose Reyes and four others to Toronto. Mathis was injured in the first spring training game in February. A .198 career hitter, Mathis joins a roster that includes two other catchers, Rob Brantly and Miguel Olivo. He fills a vacancy created when catcher Kyle Skipworth was optioned Sunday to Triple-A New Orleans.
