Hanrahan had ligament replacement surgery Thursday on his right elbow. He also had his right flexor tendon repaired by Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Fla.

Obtained from Pittsburgh in an offseason trade, the two-time All-Star is making $7.04 million this year and is eligible for free agency after the World Series. He is 0-1 with a 9.82 ERA and converted four of six save chances in nine games.

Hanrahan has been activated from the 15-day disabled list by the Boston Red Sox after two weeks out due to a sore right hamstring.

Hanrahan hurt the hamstring April 3 against the New York Yankees in his second appearance of the season. Acquired from Pittsburgh during the offseason, he is 0-1 with three saves and an 11.57 ERA in six appearances. Hanrahan will serve as setup man to right-hander Andrew Bailey, who has saved five games in six chances since Hanrahan went on the DL. Bailey is 1-0 with a 1.46 ERA in 13 games.

Hanrahan is expected to miss a few days with a sore right hamstring. Hanrahan has struggled in his first season with Boston since being acquired from Pittsburgh. In his last three appearances, he's allowed six earned runs, five hits, four walks and three homers with two strikeouts in 1 2-3 innings.

In Saturday's 2-1 win over Tampa Bay in 10 innings he walked the two batters he faced. In an 8-5 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday night, he entered in the ninth inning with a 5-3 lead then allowed five runs. The plan is for Hanrahan to rest ``the next couple of days,'' manager John Farrell said before Sunday's game with the Rays. ``We've got to let this settle down first before we get him back into game availability.''

Hanrahan blew his first save of the season, resulting in an 8-5 loss to Baltimore on Wednesday.

Hanrahan (0-1) allowed five runs on three hits and two homers in 2/3 of an inning in the loss.
