Aquatics worlds: Athletes to watch
Cochrane, Abel, Ware lead Canadian contingent
Two-time Olympic medallist Ryan Cochrane will be one of 34 Canadians competing at the FINA World Aquatics Championships in Barcelona, starting this Saturday through Aug. 4.
Eighteen reigning world champions will aim to defend their titles at the event, first held in 1973 and held every two years.
Swimming disciplines include the backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, freestyle, individual medley, freestyle relay and medley relay.
Divers will compete in 1- and 3-metre springboard, 10m platform, synchronized 3m springboard and synchronized platform.
For the first time at the FINA World Aquatics Championships, high diving will be contested, with eight women competing from a 20m platform and 14 men from a 27m platform.
There will be some notable swimmers and divers absent from this competition, including Alexandre Despatie of Laval, Que., who retired from competitive diving in June. He is the only diver ever to win gold in each of the 1-metre, 3-metre and 10-metre competitions at the world championships.
American Michael Phelps retired after the 2012 London Olympics and Norwegian swimmer Alexander Dale-Oen died a little more than a year ago.
But the competition is expected to be fierce in Spain, and we feature 10 athletes to watch in the photo gallery above.
