CITY SELECTION

The candidate cities were accepted from a total of eight applicants, which included Sarajevo, Jaca, Harbin and Andorra La Vella.

Bern, Switzerland, was initially approved along with the three current candidates, but withdrew after an unsuccessful public referendum.

An assessment was made of each applicant city's ability to stage high-level, international, multi-sport events and its ability to organize quality Olympic Winter Games in 2010. Several criteria were used, including: government support and public opinion, infrastructure, venues, environmental conditions and impact, and security.
