The Canadian women's fours kayaked to their second World Cup silver medal of the season at a canoe and kayak meet in Szeged, Hungary, on Saturday

Genevieve Orton of Dartmouth, N.S., Emilie Fournel of Montreal, Kristin Gauthier of Ottawa and Kia Byers of Regina finished second in the women's K-4 500-metre event, in a time of one minute, 47.088 seconds.

They were edged by Hungary — a team featuring two members of last year's Olympic silver medal-winning team — who crossed the line in 1:45.612. China was third in a time of 1:47.310.

Orton, Fournel and Gauthier won silver two weeks ago in Germany with fourth crew member Mylanie Barre of Lac-Beauport, Que. Byers was the new crew member this week.

"It was as perfect a race as we could execute," Byers said. "We were focused and we didn't let the (windy) conditions deter us from reaching our goal. We battled until the end."

Back-to-back World Cup silvers

Fournel added it was important that the Canadian crew make the podium after winning silver two weeks ago.

"We wanted to show that our performance at the last World Cup wasn't luck," she said. "The headwind added about 10 seconds to everyone's time so we needed to muster all our strength to get a strong finish."

The world championships are set for August 12-16 in Dartmouth, N.S., but Byers says it's too early to talk about medals for the Canadian team.

"We haven't looked that far yet," she said. "This is a turnaround year for us and a new experience. We are working on a new program and we came over here to test things out.

"So far it has been working out really well."

In the men's K-1 1,000, Canada's Adam van Koeverden of Oakville, Ont., placed fourth. The three-time Olympic medallist has won three World Cup medals so far this season.

Canada had two finalists in the men's C-1 1,000. Mark Oldershaw of Burlington, Ont., missed out on bronze by only two-10ths of a second, while Beijing Olympic bronze medallist Thomas Hall of Pointe-Claire, Que., finished fifth.
