Christine Nesbitt skate to third place in the 1,000 at the World Cup finals in Salt Lake City on Friday. (David Zalubowski)Christine Nesbitt finished third in the 1,000 metres at the speedskating World Cup finals in Salt Lake City on Friday, enough for the Canadian to capture the season championship at that distance.
Nesbitt, from London, Ont., finished 0.55 seconds behind race winner Anni Friesinger of Germany.
"I'm definitely happy with how today went," said Nesbitt. "That's a pretty cool thing. I've never won a title before so that's really neat."
Canadians Kristina Groves and Denny Morrison also claimed bronze medals — in the women's 3,000 metres and men's 1,500, respectively.
Morrison, from Fort St. John, B.C., finished 0.76 seconds behind American Shani Davis, who posted a world-record time of 1:41.80 to reclaim the mark that Morrison took from him in March in Calgary.
"It's nice to have the record back," said Davis, who was born in Chicago but now resides primarily in Calgary.
Trevor Marsicano of the United States was second in 1:42.31.
Ottawa's Groves received her bronze by finishing 1.38 seconds behind Martina Sablikova of the Czech Republic in the women's 3,000. Germany's Daniela Anschutz Thoms was second.
China's Fengtong Lu won the men's 500 metres, with Vincent Labrie of Ste-Foy, Que., the top Canadian in ninth.
