The Toronto tandem of Mark Heese and Ahren Cadieux won Tuesday's opening match at the beach volleyball world championships in Gstaad, Switzerland.

Heese and Cadieux prevailed 21-15, 25-27, 15-9 over Pablo Herrera and Raul Mesa of Spain.

Elsewhere, Conrad Leinemann of Kelowna, B.C., and partner Rich van Huizen of Belleville, Ont., lost 24-22, 21-16 to Alexander Horst and Florian Gosch of Austria.

In women's pool play, Toronto's Dana Cooke and Annie Martin of Sherbrooke, Que., fell 14-21, 21-19, 15-11 to the American duo of Nicole Branagh and Elaine Youngs.

Marie-Andree Lessard of Laval, Que., combined with Montreal's Sarah Maxwell, but they were downed 21-17, 21-13 by Lu Wang and Man Zuo of China.

Pool play continues Wednesday.
