Renate Goetschl of Austria was third in 1:54.73.
"It was far from a perfect run, that's for sure, but I was committed and relaxed all the way through," said VanderBeek, who now lives in Chilliwack, B.C.
Emily Brydon, from Fernie, B.C., was the seventh-swiftest skier in 1:55.11.
"I had a lot of fun out there today," she said. "It was nice to be back in Lake Louise.
"When I was in the start gate, I just said, 'I love what I do,' and reminded myself to enjoy it. The result has given me a boost."
Britt Janyk of Whistler, B.C., finished 19th, while Shona Rubens of Canmore, Alta., came 22nd.
The first Lake Louise women's downhill is scheduled for Friday, with the second set for Saturday and the super-G on Sunday.
Tuesday's training for this week's men's World Cup races at Beaver Creek, Colo., was cancelled because of too much snow.
