Double Olympic silver medallist Kristina Groves of Ottawa won a silver medal in the women's 3,000-metres at a long-track speed skating World Cup competition in Berlin on Saturday.

Renate Groenewold of the Netherlands was the winner in four minutes, 02.44 seconds. Groves followed in 4:03.04 and Ireen Wust of the Netherlands was third in 4:04.01.

Groves has been prowling the podium all season with two fourths and three fifth place finishes before Saturday's race.

"I've been good this season but today it was really good," said Groves. "Today I brought my brain to the race and was able to focus on the technical aspects I needed to work on."

When Wust took off like a rocket at the start, Groves didn't panic.

"I stayed relaxed and let her go and just told myself this is my pace," said Groves. "That was the highlight for me. In the past when that happens I've had a tendency to scramble."

In the B Group race, Michele d'Amours of Ste-Foy, Que., was fourth, Justine l'Heureux of St-Tite, Que., 17th and Shannon Sibold of Calgary 19th.

Other Canadian results: in the men's 1,500, Denny Morrison of Fort St. John, B.C., was sixth, Steven Elm of Red Deer, Alta., 12th, Francois-Olivier Roberge of Ste-Foy, Que., 14th and Arne Dankers of Calgary 16th.

In the women's 500, Shannon Rempel of Winnipeg was 10th and Kim Weger of Regina 21st, while in the B Group Krisy Myers of Lloydminster, Sask., was third and l'Heureux 10th.

In the men's 500, Mike Ireland of Winnipeg was 22nd while in the B Group Brock Miron of Calgary was second.

Competition ends Sunday.
