Canadian Olympic basketball tryouts begin this week
Canada's quest for an Olympic berth in women's basketball is about to heat up.
Tryouts and training for the team opens Thursday in Abbotsford, B.C., the beginning of a busy two-month stretch that culminates in the FIBA Olympic qualifying tournament in Ankara, Turkey.
The Canadian women are gunning for their first Olympic berth since the 2000 Sydney Games, and need to finish top-five in the 12-country last-chance qualifying tournament this summer.
The players will be based on B.C.'s Lower Mainland for two weeks, and will host China in three exhibition games, May 16 in Langley, May 17 in Richmond, and May 18 in Abbotsford.
The Canadians will regroup in Toronto to train early next month before travelling to Europe to play in an exhibition tournament in France.
The Olympic qualifying tournament is June 25 to July 1.
Canada's men's team didn't earn a spot in the last-chance qualifier.
