Game 5 was controlled throughout by the Washington Capitals, who got a power-play goal by Mike Green during a dominating first period, the goal of the series on a rush by Alex Ovechkin on his off wing around his Ranger nemesis Marc Staal to help eliminate the Broadway blueshirts.

Marian Gaborik won a needless race with Henrik Lundqvist to clear away a harmless puck and put it off the goalie and behind him, enabling Jason Chimera to score into an empty net at 12:36 of the second overtime.

The Caps, down 3-0 after two periods, took a 3-1 series lead with a 4-3 victory.

Caps' Knuble could miss Game 4

"I'm not talking about players," Boudreau said when asked about the availability of right wing Mike Knuble for Game 4. "His equipment is hanging in the locker room."

Eric Fehr, however, all but confirmed that he will take the place of Knuble, who was hit by a Mike Green shot on the right hand in Game 3 and took his glove off and looked for damage after scoring a goal on the same shift. Read more »

Rangers' Dubinsky doing the dirty work

It started with Rangers forward Brandon Dubinsky getting a pick from Ruslan Fedotenko on Capitals sniper Alex Ovechkin late in the third period. Dubinsky then came off the sideboards and jammed a shot that deflected off Karl Alzner's stick, bounced off the Washington defenceman's shoulder, and then ricocheted off the stick of the desperate Ovechkin for the 3-2 game-winning goal with 1:39 remaining.

It was decided within 1:57 early in the second period, when Capitals forward Brooks Laich one-handed a puck through a not-strong-enough Matt Gilroy -- the second time Laich had outhustled Gilroy in the sequence -- and beat an inattentive Brandon Dubinsky to the front of the net to convert Marcus Johansson's relay.
