The San Jose Sharks managed to cut their own throats so often in a 4-2 loss in Game 4 of the NHL Western Conference final that it looked like crosscut saw work.

Blowing five consecutive power plays in 21 minutes was enough on its own to doom any team, but San Jose then compounded its death wish by committing four indisputably bad penalties of its own in 2:46 of the second period, leading to three 5-on-3 advantages for the Vancouver Canucks that within 37 seconds became three goals.

Salo's playoffs take turn for better

Vancouver defenceman Sami Salo has experienced an up-and-down playoffs. But when Alex Edler began to struggle, the Canucks coaching staff put him alongside Salo and not only has Edler been better, but so has Salo.

Salo was a force in Game 4 Sunday against San Jose, scoring twice and seeing his ice time increase by more than six minutes to 23 minutes 33 seconds.

The Vancouver Canucks exited HP Pavilion feeling decent about two aspects of their game following their disappointing 4-3 loss to the San Jose Sharks on Friday.

Whether they can build off a strong third period or better penalty killing later in Game 3 after a horrible start will have to wait until they clash with the Sharks in the next chapter of the Western Conference final on Sunday afternoon.
