Joe Thornton of the San Jose Sharks and Jonathan Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks squared off in an unusual fight between two star captains on Friday.
On a day a meteor blazed through the skies over central Russia, another rare sight surprised hockey fans Friday.

Joe Thornton of the San Jose Sharks and Jonathan Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks squared off in an unusual fight between two star captains.

The clash originated when Toews repeatedly shoved Thornton in the corner and drew a boarding penalty with less than five minutes left in the first period. Moments later, Toews instigated the bout when he skated up to Thornton, jabbed him with his stick and dropped his gloves.

The scrap lasted about a minute before Thornton dragged Toews to the ice and the referees intervened.

Both centremen received five minutes for fighting and Toews received an additional two minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct.

What did you think of the incident? Did you ever think you would see these two captains go toe-to-toe? What's your take on why Toews instigated the contest? Watch the video below and let us know your thoughts in the comments section.
