The Penguins issued a statement Friday that Maatta tested positive for the virus and remains in isolation. Maatta is already out because of an upper body issue. The 20-year-old missed two weeks this season after surgery to remove a cancerous thyroid tumor.
Maata, who was also diagnosed with the mumps this season, could sit out until at least the final week of January.
The 20-year-old Maatta underwent surgery earlier this month at the urging of doctors, who detected it during a preseason physical. Maatta returned to the ice a few days after the procedure, and coach Mike Johnston says Maatta could have come back over the weekend but the team wanted to give him a few extra days to get his legs back.
The tumor was discovered during a preseason physical. Maatta underwent further tests before team doctors came to a diagnosis. He is scheduled to miss four weeks but is cleared to play until the surgery.
Though not a fantasy option for the moment, monitor Maatta's progress.
