The Detroit goaltender hadn't played since Dec. 19 because of a groin injury.
Howard made 29 saves before falling to 1-6 in tiebreakers this season. "What I don't like is Howie stood on his head and leaves the rink feeling like he didn't win," coach Mike Babcock said. "They don't have a home run derby at the end of a tied ballgame, because it doesn't make any sense."
This was nice bounce back for Howard, who allowed a season-high four goals two days earlier versus Montreal.
Howard improved to 2-1-1 with a 1.72 GAA in the early going. He could be in for a big season if his first four games are any indication.
The injury isn't considered serious, and Howard could be available against Montreal on Tuesday.
Howard faces the Bruins again in his next start after he beat them in the opener.
