Coach Mike Shanahan said Tuesday that Thomas will have surgery on a torn ligament in the left foot. Thomas will require four to five months of recovery and will be placed on injured reserve. Thomas is a fourth-round pick from Fresno State. He was injured in last week's preseason opener against the Tennessee Titans.
Thomas, a first-team AP All-American, was the 119th overall selection in last month's NFL draft. He sat out the 2011 season with a broken left leg and dislocated ankle.
The selection means the Redskins have selected the last two players who have led the FBS in interceptions. Thomas had eight for the Bulldogs last year, and second-round pick David Amerson had 13 with North Carolina State in 2011. The Redskins needed help in the secondary after they ranked 30th in the league against the pass last year.
