Indianapolis coach Chuck Pagano made the announcement on Wednesday. The Colts had hoped Allen would heal with rest, but doctors say surgery is required. Allen caught a touchdown pass in the season-opening win against Oakland, but was inactive for last Sunday's loss to the Miami Dolphins. Coby Fleener will have an expanded role in replacing Allen.
