Locker is retiring from football rather than hit free agency after four NFL seasons with the Tennessee Titans. He says in a statement that he no longer has the "burning desire" needed to keep playing the game for a living. The 26-year-old Locker wrote Tuesday in a statement released through his agent, Camron Hahn, that he decided to retire after talking with his family.

He says trying to keep playing without that desire for the game "would be unfair to the next organization with whom I would eventually sign." Locker says he knows his decision is surprising to many but he knows it's right in his heart. The Titans drafted Locker with the eighth pick overall in 2011, but he dealt with injuries and was benched in October.

Locker's season is over and now that the Titans have placed him on injured reserve with an injured left shoulder, it's likely so is his time in Tennessee.

Locker hurt his non-throwing shoulder when hit by Jets defensive end Quinton Coples late in the first half of a 16-11 loss Sunday. The Titans announced the move Monday.

Locker relieved Zach Mettenberger Sunday and completed six of 12 passes for 91 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

Locker did not fare well once he entered the game for the injured-Mettenberger. Even if Mettenberger cannot play, Locker is not a reliable fantasy option moving forward.

Locker practiced on Wednesday but his status for this weekend's game against Houston remains unclear.

Locker left practice without stopping for his weekly meeting with the media. Coach Ken Whisenhunt says the quarterback didn't take questions because the Titans will know more about his status Thursday.

Locker is active for the Titans.

Locker had been out with a bruised right thumb. Rookie Zach Mettenberger is the new man in town in Nashville.

Locker is on track to return to the starting lineup for Tennessee against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. Locker was listed Friday as probable on the final injury report. He sat out last week's 41-17 loss at Indianapolis with a wrist injury to his right, throwing arm, which he hurt the week before in Cincinnati.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt says Locker has had a good week of practice. He says the Titans weren't sure how well Locker would be working his way back, but he has progressed throughout the week.

Locker is back on the field with the Tennessee Titans - a couple of weeks ahead of the schedule doctors estimated for his return from an injured right foot.

Locker took part in his first team drills Tuesday since suffering a Lisfranc injury to his right foot Nov. 10, which cost him the final seven games of the season. He has missed 14 of his first 32 starts and now is busy learning a third offense in four seasons with a coaching change.
