Mathis is the inaugural winner of the NFL's Deacon Jones Award. The honor, which goes to the NFL sacks champion, was announced Thursday.

The perennial Pro Bowler set a franchise single-season record with 19 1/2 sacks, giving him half a sack more than St. Louis' Robert Quinn. Mathis also surpassed Dwight Freeney's franchise record for career sacks. Freeney finished his Colts career with 107 1/2 sacks. Mathis now has 111.

Robert Mathis won the NFL sacks title during the Colts Week 17 victory over the Jaguars. Mathis, who led the league in sacks most of the season, retook the lead by sacking Chad Henne once in each half to give him 19 1/2. A third sack was awarded to Jerrell Freeman, though it appeared Mathis made the initial contact.

St. Louis' Robert Quinn fell 1/2 sack short of Mathis, who joined Dwight Freeney as Indy's only sacks champions.

Mathis had two sacks in Sunday's 38-8 loss to St. Louis.

Mathis retained the league lead with 13 1/2 and is an excellent choice to lead your fantasy pass rush.

The NFL won't allow Mathis to use his face mask on game days.

During training camp practice, Mathis has worn a cagey-looking white face mask that covers up just about everything except his eyes. Mathis used his Twitter account to explain why fans would not see the same protection Sunday against Buffalo and wrote that he would be returning to his "run of the mill grill."
