Richard has decided to become a free agent after clearing outright waivers. San Diego general manager Josh Byrnes made the announcement Monday regarding Richard, who spent two stints on the disabled list during a disappointing 2013 season.

Richard, who had been a staple in the rotation, received an injection in his shoulder but still wound up on the 60-day DL on July 12 after he needed season-ending surgery to repair the AC joint.

Richard will have surgery on his left shoulder and is expected to miss the rest of the season.

Richard was moved from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL on Friday. He' been sidelined since June 22.

Richard went a season-high eight innings, allowing one run on seven hits in Sunday's 4-1 win over Arizona.

It was his first win as a starter since Sept. 20. 2012, ending a streak of seven consecutive losing decisions.

Richard earned his first win of the season in the San Diego Padres' 4-3 victory in 17 innings over the Toronto Blue Jays early Saturday

Richard (1-5), who had been scheduled to start Saturday night, came on to start the 16th. He came in 0-5 with an 8.35 ERA in seven starts and recently spent time on the disabled list with an intestinal virus. He gave up one hit and struck out two in two innings in his first relief appearance since May 2009 with the Chicago White Sox.

The San Diego Padres have reinstated winless left-hander Clayton Richard from the 15-day disabled list in time to start against the Seattle Mariners on Monday.

Richard is 0-4 with an 8.54 ERA in six starts for the Padres. Richard originally got sick at San Francisco two weeks ago, causing a start to be pushed back a few days.

Richard's struggles continued in an 8-1 loss to Arizona on Saturday.

Richard (0-4, 8.54 ERA) gave up seven runs over 3 2-3 innings, and is now 0-3 with a 13.09 ERA in his last three starts.

Richard lasted just 1 2-3 innings in his return from illness Tuesday against Milwaukee, giving up six runs and six hits.

Richard was scratched from his scheduled start Saturday night against the San Francisco Giants after he came down with a stomach virus. Manager Bud Black says Richard began vomiting after he woke up Saturday morning and had no energy.

Richard fared well in his final spring outing, allowing one earned run (three total) on five hits in five innings in Thursday's 6-4 win over Cleveland. He also struck out five and walked one.

His next outing will come on April 3 against the New York Mets.
