BOSTON (AP) Red Sox outfielder Jonny Gomes says the beard that became such a recognizable part of the team's World Series championship will be gone before spring training.

Gomes says he'll start the year off clean. The beard will be filed ''in the archive,'' along with other memories of the team that won last year's title.

After adding free agents like Gomes, Mike Napoli and Shane Victorino, the Red Sox went from 63 wins in 2012 to the franchise's third championship in 10 years. On the way, the beards became a symbol of clubhouse camaraderie.

Red Sox manager John Farrell says he saw Mike Napoli recently and he's still got the bushy growth under his chin.

Farrell says his team will be cleaned up - but not necessarily clean-shaven - when the season starts.
