Here in Canada, we've decided that it's unacceptable to abuse or torture animals. Each province and territory has animal protection laws on the books.
But should those same protections be extended to robots?
Kate cites research that links animal abuse, child abuse, and domestic abuse. "Behaviors tend to translate," she says, suggesting that protecting robots has more to do with us than them: "This isn't really about protecting the objects. This is about protecting our societal values and protecting ourselves."
Nora will interview Kate for Spark next week.
What do you think? Should we treat robots the same way we treat a pet cat? Vote yes or no below, or explain why in the comments.
