Re: your contest
After much careful consideration, I have concluded that the device that would cause me the most grief if I didn’t have it is my wife’s iPhone. If it was lost or not working, I am confident that I would be unable to relax. In all seriousness, my wife also volunteers teaching in Costa Rica, and there are often places where power is not available or out of service, and the ability to charge her phone, our cameras, etc. using solar power would be a real blessing (especially in a country where there is lots of sun).
Thanks for the great shows SPARK.
I would be lost without my iPod , between the music and video content it can store, it provides a perfect compliment to my sketch pad and book. I have taken to storing photos of sketches on it as well under photos to have a more portable copies to look at.
Well, being in Ohio I guess I don't qualify for the contest – but what I'd like is a solar charger for my 2004 Prius.
I LOVE your show. As a teacher of the environment at college, your podcasts often resonate with me, and by extension, my students. I must say that since purchasing an ipod touch, my multimedia experience has undergone a total change. My otherwise theoretical perspective has broadened to include a smattering of current events, that never fail impress even my students.
I am glad that you consistently pay such comprehensive attention to matters of environment, that are so closely related to modern technology. Green technological advances are a blossoming area of development that should grow into distinct categories – separating the good from the useless; novelty from need; and green from gray.
I am not sure that the social networking/ reward side of Changers would motivate me to use this device any more or less. However, I can imagine this solar panel being a very interesting pedagogical tool for my environment students. Maybe they would be interested in tracking their teacher's ipod and cell phone charging… I could probably use the data for our ecological footprint unit.
At this point, the ipod has become an indispensable way for me to continue learning, between giving classes and correcting papers. Without podcasts, I might become a very dull teacher.
I know this is really late, but the digital device I can't live without is my laptop. While that doesn't sound particularly cutting edge, here's why it's so important.
1) I need it for work. I manage an on-line historical archive for a hospital in Montreal.
2) I need it for school. I have a form of dyslexia (never diagnosed, but kind of obvious) and I use my laptop to read books and articles for my PhD. (I also scan and OCR my books. Very handy.)
3) I need it for everything else. It is my home theatre, my stereo.
Case in point. Yesterday Hydro Quebec cut the power to do some rewiring on my house. While I had been told about this beforehand, it was only when the power was cut that I realized I couldn't do anything. I couldn't do school work, I couldn't do work work. Nothing. So I went for a run, with the shoes I bought on-line using my laptop and my I pod which I had charged and synced with my laptop that morning.
If the power grid or computer technology ever comes crashing down, I seriously screwed!
