So, I went to Rev. Heather McCance's website to see what she was discussing. I saw the PDF files of the sermons. What was clearly missing was any reference to a license agreement (in legalese or in "human" readable form
It might be because I've spend all of my adult life part of the Peer Production sector, but I think that there is a simple solution to the alleged problem. When there is no license agreement indicated it might be old-economy copyright law that says you need permission, but according to strict letter of that law (and in the language of the lobbiests) they were "pirating" when they viewed/downloaded and/or printed the sermon in the first place. Given you have to ignore the strict letter of copyright law in order to live a reasonable life, I believe it is up to the authors to clarify what they think is reasonable beyond clearly making it legal for people to have viewed the sermons in the first place.
In this case the reverend seemed to be worried about attribution. This is exactly what the Creative Commons attribution license was designed for — to clarify that the author isn't saying no to downloading/printing or sharing, isn't demanding money, but is demanding attribution.
Hope this can help other people avoid the "problem" of people doing more with their work than they thought reasonable after having not indicated to anyone what they thought was reasonable.
