Hurrah! Grammar Girl, aka Mignon Fogarty, has signed on to do a special grammar series with us this fall. Mignon was one of our favourite guests last year, so we called her up and asked to her to join the team for a few weeks in September and October.
Mignon is the host of the popular Grammar Girl podcast and she’s the author of Grammar Girl’s Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing. Her podcast is very handy for those of us who need a refresher on what we learned in English class.
She’ll answer your modern day grammar, style and writing questions for 5 weeks, so start sending your queries now.
Not sure if the emoticon goes before or after the period? Is internet spelled with a capital I? We’ll be taping Mignon’s segments soon. You can send your question by email, or leave us a phone message at 1-877-34-SPARK.

Yay! I totally <3 GrammarGirl. So exciting!
I'm wondering if she has any thoughts on what we can do about the plague of apostrophes in plurals. Or, as some people might say, apostrophe's in plural's. Sigh.
Hurray – GrammarGirl is awesome, and she is so helpful.
I wonder if this is similar to your discussion about "By Accident versus On Accident:"
My son's generation refers to calling in sick at work to "calling out." It makes me nuts! Is this an under 35 thing, or can I just start pounding it into their heads that it is plan wrong? I would so enjoy doing so!!
P.S.: I just received your book the other day. It's mahvelous! A terrific resource!
I totally love GrammarGirl. She's very helpful.
almost as bad as "Write me" (ugh) vs "Write to me" (beam)
although I have to admit that I would not use "Phone to me" so my logic is not consistent
woah…….!!

My family and I live with serious fears regarding the word 'vacuum': Why does this word have two 'U' s in it? If we could all agree to spell it with only one 'U', and then simply add an 'e' in order to make it sound like a long 'U', all would be well. Unfortunately, NO ONE in Canada thought of THAT, so we are forever forced to spell it with two 'U's. To add fuel to the fire, everytime that this offending appliance is released from it's lair, I find myself alone; a warrior battling both the dust of retreating family members as well as the injustices of grammar.
I heard you on the CBC discussing the proper way to send an email. Start with Hello, (Comma) _________ (name of person). I've started to use this in my daily writing. Please remind me why this is the correct way. I need to be ready with a reply when people attempt to correct me.
Thanks!
Interesting post, thanks for sharing this useful article.
