Help Us Out!

We’re really happy about, and thankful for, all of you who took the time to read the blog, listen to extended features, comment on our posts, and call in your comments. We particularly like hearing your story ideas and thoughts on what kinds of stories you’d like us to cover in upcoming episodes (and not just because we’re lazy, either!)
If you’ve got a suggestion, tip, or story idea for next season, please leave it here by clicking on “Comments” below. You can also send an email to spark [at] cbc [dot] ca

Behind the Scenes

We rolled out the last episode of the first season of Spark on June 18th and 21st. Thanks to everyone who listened and visited us at here at the blog. Thanks to your support, Spark is coming back for a new season at the beginning of September. Yippee! So, here’s the game plan while Spark is on hiatus.
If you listen to Spark on the radio, you’ll be hearing two great, new summer series: On Wednesdays, you can hear Crossing Boundaries; on Saturdays, there’s Between You And Me.
If you subscribe to the podcast, pleeeeeaaase stay subscribed. We’ll be featuring a different, long-form interview or panel each week. They’ll come out on Wednesdays, as usual.
And the blog? Much as we love the blog, there are no resources available for maintaining it while we’re on hiatus. If you’d like to leave a story idea for next season, we’d love to read what you have to say. I’ve written a separate post for that, below. We’ll be back to blogging as soon as we get production underway in mid-August.
Thanks again for listening!

This morning, Nora interviewed Ken Banks of kiwanja.net. They talked about the “The Grassroots Mobile Revolution” in Africa — design and innovation, informal businesses built on the back of the cell phone industry, and how mobiles can be used for development work.
A shorter version of the interview will air on the June 18 episode of Spark, but you can listen to the full interview below or download the mp3.

Help Us Out!
Africa has almost 300 million mobile phone subscribers, with a penetration rate fast approaching 30%. That has led to what Ken Banks calls the “grassroots mobile revolution.” Ken is an anthropologist who has spent the last 15 years working on projects in Africa, specializing in mobile technology and its use in the developing world.
Nora will interview Ken on Monday. They’ll talk about design and innovation, informal businesses built on the back of the cell phone industry, and how mobiles can be used for development work. Do you have a question for Ken? Leave it in the comments below.
You can find more on Ken and his work at kiwanja.net, and in his recent photo essay Africa’s grassroots mobile revolution – a traveller’s perspective.

Grandma Dinner
Many thanks to everyone who came out to our Grandma Dinner last night. Elena DiCesare charmed her guests and filled their tummies with a fantastic feast. Thank you to Elena and her husband Otto for taking part!
The generous guys at Cowbell, especially Chef Mark Cutrara, made everyone feel at home in their superb restaurant.
We’ve posted photos to Flickr if you’d like to check out the event.
Check out our first post about Grandma dinners. Everything you need to know about hosting this event in your own town is there.
