Welcome to the Luna City Arcade

arcade from the outside...

This is Peter Hirschberg’s personal arcade from the outside. Don’t you think it kind of looks like a barn? His Luna City Arcade sits next to his house in Linden, Virginia. It’s not open to the public, but every so often he throws open the doors for a big game day. When that happens, this is what you see:

Wowza! Our favorite feature is the glow in the dark carpet. Peter only has 2 rules when it comes to his arcade: you have to use the quarters he provides, and you can’t take his quarters with you.

But why build this tribute to the 80s? When Peter was a kid, he imagined he would own an arcade as an adult, he just didn’t realize there wouldn’t be any when he grew up. Sniff…

This week on Spark, we’ll take you inside the arcade. In the meantime, you can check out Peter’s photos here or click on the video below to see what it looks like in action.

Many thanks to Sharon Rae Pettigrew for collecting the audio for this story. Sharon had a great time hanging out with Peter and the gang at Luna City. If you look closely in this video, you can see her with her tape recorder!
