Is your Grandma a great cook?
I mean, a really FANTASTIC cook? Not just a plate of cookies, but someone who can cook up a mouthwatering feast?
If so, we’d like to host a dinner party with her. We’re getting set to launch the first
Here’s the back-story:
Recently, we saw a blog post by Geneva-based entrepreneur Laurent Haug. We are big fans of Laurent, his blog, and his Lift conference. Check out the Lift site for all kinds of big ideas about technology and society.
Laurent’s blog post talked about his “dinner with grandma” nights. Basically, Laurent finds a grandmother who is a wonderful cook. He finds a restaurant to host the event. He posts a note on his blog, and the first people who sign up come to a dinner prepared by the grandmother (with help, of course, from Laurent and the restaurant staff.)
Why do this? Laurent says: “one of the biggest injustices of our time is… that we don’t get to eat food that is as good as what we deserve on a daily basis, and grandmothers, who make the best food, usually cook for themselves, so that’s another injustice.”
Laurent’s philosophy is that grandmothers deserve praise for their hard earned culinary knowledge and that younger generations have a lot to learn from senior citizens and their under appreciated talents.
On this week’s show we have an interview with Laurent about his Grandma evenings.
Laurent’s idea sounded like so much fun, we thought we’d like to try it ourselves. So, we are making plans for our very own dinner with Grandma night.
But we’re missing one thing: A Grandma. So, we want you to nominate your grandmother for this event.
The ideal candidate:
- Is great cook. We need someone who can create a wonderful meal with original home-tested recipes.
- lives in the Toronto area. Nora and the Spark gang live in Toronto, so we’re going to have to host this event in our home base this time.
- deserves some serious praise for her amazing culinary talents.
Leave a comment below with why you think your grandma would be perfect for this event. Please include your proper email address when you fill out the form, so we can contact you (your address will not appear online.) Or you can email us at spark@cbc.ca with your nomination.
If you want to attend the event, hold tight while we get the details sorted out. In a few weeks we will post with more information about the who, what, when, where.
I would love this opportunity to nominate my Grandmother whose specialty is authentic Macedonian cuisine. The entire family looks forward to holidays such as upcoming Easter so we can indulge in her mouth-watering stews and cheese philo pastries. As she is now alone, it is a shame that she does not cook as often. I would love her to have this opportunity to show of her culinary skills, which are cherished in our family.
Thank you,
Gillian Flanagan
It’s too bad that the search is limited to the Toronto area, because that means you are totally going to miss out on the best grandmother feast that Canada has to offer: Nan Penney’s JIGS DINNER in Salmon Cove, Newfoundland.
Oh well, maybe next time.
I would like to nominate Eva Parisi for the Grandma dinner- Eva is the grandmother of 5 and soon to be greatgrandma.
Eva ran an Italian Restaurant- la Cantina in Richmond Hill for 10 yrs
then became a food manager for Versa ( Parnel) foods for 20 yrs managing school cafaterias always proitably but with the best food quality in the system.
Eva now 82 retired at 65 and has worked as a volunteer running the Cummer house seniors residence for many many yrs- in North York- Eva ran the gift shop, hair dressing salon & snack bar always with a special smile for the seniors many younger than herself. She always produces a profit that is returned to the senor’s fund for special extras for the residents
Eva’s family is key to her esp her Sunday family dinners- always a treat- She makes a special birthday dinner for each of her three Children- ravoli, lasagna, veal & peppers or whatever that child desires for his or her special day. Her grandchildren adore her soups….
I can go on , on on
But Eva donates her time to the betterment of humanity & should be praised. Eva has previouly been City of Toronto’ Volunteer of the yr.
regards
Mel Parisi
I wish I still had a grandmother but I would love to contribute to a trial of the idea here in Montreal if someone else finds a Grandmother who is willing to try
Hello, So my father is a great cook, he is in fact a grandfather to my nephew and I was wondering if he is eligible to cook in this event, or is it limited to grandMOTHERS?
Please put me on the email list for info about Dinner with Grandma — I’d love to attend/help out. No grandmothers available but I’m interested to learn from others’ grandmothers!
I would like to nominate my mother, a grandmother of 6 kids, who is such an awesome cook of Indian food that anytime friends come over they crave the food they just ate at my mom’s house. They always say they have never had this kind of Indian food anywhere.
Her food is so good, my mom inspired some of the food that is served at my restaurant in Toronto.
I would love to have the opportunity to show off my mom’s culinary talents to Torontonians.
