Are You a Times New Roman or a Tahoma?

I have a pet peeve. Well, actually, anyone who knows me will tell you I have many pet peeves, so let’s say I have a font-related pet peeve. I really hate the “Times New Roman” font. You may be familiar with it; it’s the default font in Microsoft’s Word program. I just think it’s unattractive. All serif-y. Maybe it works well with the rough paper of newsprint, but I don’t think it looks good on a screen. And it goes beyond that. I find I have a little bubble of irritation when I get something from someone written in Times New Roman. ‘What?’ I think, ‘you couldn’t be bothered to select a font? You just went with….default?’ It just seems sort of, well, apathetic. (See, I said I have many pet peeves). Now that anyone who uses a word processing program picks fonts all the time, fonts have a new currency in the culture. There is even a popular documentary about the Helvetica font. So, we’re making a documentary about fonts. Tell us your font tales: Do you have a favourite font? One that you can’t stand? Why? We want to hear from you, the font of all wisdom. (Ouch)
