Enjoyed part 1 of “The Future of the 3D Web”. I read (then re-read) the latest creation of science fiction author Vernor Vinge (pronounced VIN-jee, rhyming with ‘stingy’).
This book is called “Rainbows End” and takes place in the near future in a Southern California landscape that is virtualized by people wearing portable computer tech. People not only network and communicate electronically as they rove about, but also apply “skins” to the local reality to make it appear like Disneyland, a pine forest or populated by cartoon characters.
In “Rainbows End”, Vinge has painted a 3D picture of the 3D Web.
I find it fascinating how influential science fiction writers have been in all this: Gibson with “cyberspace”, Neal Stephenson with the idea of the “metaverse”…and I guess sadly, how predictive Philip K. Dick in particular was, in a dystopian way.
I’ll check out Rainbow’s End!
Awesome episode. I’m enjoying this show so much. Keep up the great work Nora.
Great joke about transcripts too. Nice one! Funny.
