This weekend, because we are the province that never stops celebrating, the Sask Country Music Awards hits Saskatoon and Area, and the Saskatchewan Book Awards Regina, and we join in the celebration with a feature In Session talk and play/read with SCMA nominee JJ Voss, and SBA nominee and crowd-sourcing graphic novel creator Art Slade.
J.J. Voss delivers an unmistakable mainstream brand of outlaw Country music with an infusion of Americana flavour, derived from his rural roots in western Canada and his passion for honest, blue collar storytelling. His dedication as a relentless "live show" road warrior has paid off with prestigious appearances at the Canada Summer Games, World Curling Championships, Juno-Fest, the Calgary Stampede, The Millennium Music Festival & Conference, Dauphin Countryfest, the longest running country music festival in Canada and the prestigious Big Valley Jamboree and Craven Country Jamborees'.
His entertaining persona, journeyman calibre song writing and riveting live performances have earned him opening slots for Raul Malo, Johnny Reid, Neal McCoy, Charlie Major, Black Hawk and The Roadhammers, as well as, playing at major events alongside George Strait, Tim McGraw, Sugarland, Toby Keith, Martina McBride, Kenny Chesney, Trace Adkins and Joe Nichols.
J.J.'s performances in Nashville were enthusiastically embraced by the country music fans in attendance, after which, he was invited to perform live on the Billy Block radio program at 12th and Porter and at the world famous Tootsies Lounge. In addition he also received radio airplay on 103.7 WKDF and on the Nashville Broadcasting Network.
His discography includes the debut album "Hillbilly Storybook", which earned him a Producer of the Year nomination from the Western Canadian Music Association and subsequently the 2011 sophomore album "Show 'em Who's Voss", produced in Nashville by former Steve Earle band member and Grammy-nominated producer "Harry Stinson" (Peter Frampton, Elton John, Steve Earle, Lyle Lovett, Martina McBride, Marty Stuart).
The "Show 'em Who's Voss" release has seen two radio singles "It's A Pride Thing" and "Bare Bones", that are receiving air play on commercial country radio across Canada in 38 markets, with the third single "Playing For Keeps", released nationally on January 28th 2013. The "It's A Pride Thing" single also charted at # 62 on the Nielsen BDS charts and the music video has garnered rotation on the TCN Video network in the U.S. 2013 finds J.J. Voss continuing his musical sojourn across Canada and into the North Eastern U.S.A. at carefully selected events and music industry showcases.
He is crafting his third album, that promises to be his brightest and best work ever, as like all of us, he continues to grow his talent, song writing skills, industry contacts, fan base and wisdom. All of which will expand his presence in the International musical marketplace.
Saskatoon YA author and GG-winner Arthur Slade is always nominated for something! His fantastically successful Hunchback Assignments series is now complete, but he has just raised $18,000 through crowd-sourcing to create a stand alone Modo graphic novel Modo: Ember's End (see promo above) I caught up with him just as the third Modo had been released, and he was finishing the last one. That book, Island of Doom, is nominated for a SBA in the Young Adult category.
