Green Party of Saskatchewan Leader Sandra FinleyLooking for a breakthrough in 2007, the Green Party of Saskatchewan is running candidates in 48 constituencies, up from the 27 that it ran -- under the New Green Alliance Party banner -- in 2003.

Leader Sandra Finley, a longtime Saskatoon community activist, was elected party leader in April. She's running in Saskatoon Nutana, the constituency currently held by high-profile New Democrat Pat Atkinson.

Finley, who also ran in the Martensville byelection earlier this year, says Saskatchewan needs to reduce its impact on the environment.

The Green party wants to do away with coal-fired electrical plants, and charge oil and gas companies more to extract resources.

Finley also wants the way people use water to change, moving away from using heavily treated drinking water for such purposes as washing cars and watering lawns.

The Green party also wants to encourage smaller-scale energy projects that use wind, sunlight, and geothermal power, Finley says.

In 2003, the New Green Alliance, the predecessor of the Green Party of Saskatchewan, received 2,323 votes, less than one per cent of votes cast.
