LLOYDMINSTER

Candidates:

  NDP: Wayne Byers
  SASK: Milt Wakefield
  Liberal: Richard Sparks

Current MLA: This riding has been reconfigured. Milt Wakefield (Sask) is the MLA for Lloydminster. Maynard Sontag is the MLA for Meadow Lake.

Constituency Profile: This riding, located in NW Saskatchewan, depends almost entirely on oil production and agriculture. The Lloydminster Heavy Oil Upgrader is in the riding. Farming operations are mixed and very diversified (cattle, pigs, game, sheep, grain, pulse crops). Lloydminster, the largest centre in the riding takes advantage of tourism potential of its distinction as Canada's only border city (Sask/Alta) – its unique location makes Lloydminster exempt from provincial sales tax. The Onion Lake Indian Reserve is in the riding.

Political History: The boundaries have changed since the last election. The Lloydminster constituency now includes some polls from the Meadow Lake riding.

The Saskatchewan Party and the NDP still appear to be in a dead heat in the days before the Nov. 5 election. For the campaign teams, capturing the undecided voter and making sure their existing supporters actually vote are the keys to winning.
