Amazingly after six months of training, twenty days of training camp, two exhibition games, and seventeen regular season games the playoff picture for the majority of the teams in the CFL remains unclear.

Playing Receiver in the CFL:
October 28, 2009 | 09:50 PM
As I am sure you are all aware, two weeks ago in a home game against the Toronto Argonauts we lost our most valuable receiver, Weston Dressler, to an ankle injury. At the time I was playing wide receiver, however on the following play I was thrown into the slot.
Instant Classics:
October 21, 2009 | 09:25 AM
Despite playing in the CFL for nearly two full seasons Saturday night’s overtime game against Calgary was a first for me. In fact short of a win, last weekend’s game just may have been the most exciting sixty minutes of football I have ever been a part of.
Injuries:
October 16, 2009 | 08:04 AM
Over the course of a six month season there are bound to be bumps, bruises and even season ending injuries. Seeing as how fans always wonder what players do when they are hurt and why they don’t get back faster I figured I would try an explain what is involved during a players road to recovery.
Thanksgiving, football and filling in the gaps
October 14, 2009 | 02:48 PM
As the weather changes and November draws increasingly near the atmosphere and energy around the football stadium is rejuvenated as players see the opportunity and importance of every snap leading up to the Grey Cup.
Making the Band:
October 08, 2009 | 09:15 AM
During the late stages of training camp the entire team was brought together in the auditorium at
Luther College for one of the many team-building activities. During camp, coming together as a
group through team-building activities such as practise or meetings are very common occurrences.
Thirds:
October 07, 2009 | 09:20 AM
Coaches always tell their players to play the game of football one play at a time, one drive at a
time and ultimately one game at a time. Too often it seems that when you look ahead or rest on your
past success, you succumb to failure. As such, on our team we try and approach our season in
sections, specifically by breaking the 18 regular season games into thirds.
Behind the Scenes:
September 30, 2009 | 09:15 AM
On a football team there are many important people slotted in many different positions and jobs and
while some of these jobs are glamorous others are not. From the outside looking in, most people
only see and credit those working day to day in the public eye for the roughriders recent success,
but in my opinion it’s the people behind the scenes that really make this organization great.
Leadership
September 25, 2009 | 08:37 PM
There are many different kinds of leaders, styles of leading and types of roles one can play within a football team. Interestingly, some types of personalities thrive in one situation while being completely ineffective in another. Perhaps more than any other sport football has a really unique mix of players, people and roles ...
Rebounding:

Obviously last Sunday’s loss to the Eskimos was really disappointing but it was not the end of the
world. As a team we missed on an opportunity to become the top dog in the Western Conference.
However watching film, seeing our mistakes and missed opportunities has once again ignited a fire
within each of us players to get redemption on the green and gold.
Honouring the past:
September 18, 2009 | 03:53 PM
This weekend marks a great opportunity to extend our win streak to three games as well as celebrate a few legends within this organization’s historic past at the Plaza of Honour dinner this Friday. When I came here as a rookie I definitely didn’t understand the importance of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, either within this province or within this country.
Living in the present:
September 17, 2009 | 04:03 PM
Last Sunday’s score in Winnipeg may have been as shocking to us as it was for the Bombers. Of course I wouldn’t have changed a thing, in fact I would love to win by forty some odd points every week but in fairness to all the talent around the league that really is not something that can be expected on a week to week basis. The win was great for a few reasons. First and foremost, with the western division being as tight as it is every point is extremely important. Secondly, beating a team back to back no matter what record they have is very difficult to do, let alone in Winnipeg where the fans are almost as passionate about football as they are here.

Naturally Labour Day weekend is always exciting because of the rivalries that have been built up over the last 100 years. However, as both a fan and a player what really seems to make it special is that in this league you get to do it two weekends in a row. For the fans this is great because both cities get a chance to showcase their stadium, crowd and really for them it’s a clash to see which teams fans are tops in the league.
Regina:
September 09, 2009 | 04:24 PM
Although I have lived in Regina only as a football player, the time I have spent here over the last two years has allowed me to meet several people that have been extremely generous and kind to a no-name kid out of Ontario.
Labour Day Classic:
September 04, 2009 | 03:51 PM
The Labour Day Classic weekend is highly anticipated every year because unlike the rest of the schedule in the CFL this week always has the same match ups. In Ontario it’s the Argo’s versus the Ti-Cats and Montreal versus BC. While in the west, the “Battle of Alberta” spotlights the Edmonton Eskimos facing off with the Calgary Stampeder’s and finally, the most highly anticipated and watched game of the weekend sees the Riders mix it up with the Blue Bombers.
Adjusting after the Bye Week:
September 01, 2009 | 02:44 PM
After a great seven days in Ontario the time has quickly arrived to return to Regina and get back to work. Interestingly, in just one year my energy and excitement level this time around is completely different. As a first year player last year coming out of University the longest season I had ever played was one exhibition game, eight regular season games and two (unfortunately just two) playoff games in one season.
Bye Week:
August 20, 2009 | 03:37 PM
After a long training camp, two exhibition games and eight regular season games, your body starts to wear down and all the small aches and pains that started back in May seem to become slightly more irritable. Fortunately, after leaving it all on the field this Friday night in Montreal the entire team will have seven days to refocus our minds, refresh our legs and re-energize our spirits for the long and demanding second half the CFL season.
Adversity:
August 19, 2009 | 03:32 PM
Sunday nights' game was cold, windy, and wet but dispute the horrible weather we still managed to finish a game that had just about everything. Obviously you never want to let an opponent back into the game like we did, but once again the season is young and if nothing else it taught us two important lessons.
Rituals, Habits and Superstitions:
August 13, 2009 | 10:43 PM
Weekly habits, pre-game meals and game day routines have for a long time been regular occurrence in almost any locker room regardless of the sport. Often fans see hockey goalies tapping their goalposts between shifts or after goals, baseball players chew enormous amounts of seeds and of course in many different sports, including football, you often see players using sniffing salts not always because they need the stimulation but simple because it’s what they have done in the past.
Home Away from Home: Part II
August 12, 2009 | 03:24 PM
As week six in the CFL wrapped up Saturday night it marked the end of the first third of the 2009 CFL season. As long as the season is I must say I can’t believe how quickly it’s going by. Training camp has fast become a distant memory, and now is a good time to look back at the positive and negative things that have gotten us to this point and what we need to do if we plan to reach the Grey Cup.
Home Away from Home: Part I
August 06, 2009 | 02:57 PM
Being away from your friends, your family and a beautiful wife is never easy but living in Regina has a few perks of its own. Coming back for my second season this year I contemplated a few different living arrangements. Living alone or sharing a two bedroom apartment were both considered but in the end I decided to go “college style” and live with four guys on the team and one beauty pit bull named Oscar.
13th Man

Before all Calgary games prior to heading to the hotel the team stops at the McMahon Stadium for a pre-game walk-thru. Oddly enough, before we headed off the field Omar Morgan mentioned that McMahon Stadium was going to be our home field come game time. Sure enough, as we headed out for warm-up the north end of the stadium was filled with green and the rider cheers poured over the team as we stretched for the game.
Road Trips:
July 30, 2009 | 11:19 PM
This weekend we head to Calgary for game five of the very young 2009 CFL season. Being that we have been at home for the last two games this is another opportunity to get on the road, bond as a team and spoil the entire weekend for all diehard Stamps fans.
Family:
July 28, 2009 | 03:42 PM
To become a professional in any field of work you have to make certain sacrifices. For an athlete, they begin at a relatively early age. Late nights are often cut short for early morning practise, certain social events are missed because of lifts and workouts and perhaps most difficult to handle are the days and even months spent away from family and friends.
The Next Game
July 28, 2009 | 03:40 PM
Regardless of the sport, nobody likes losing. In fact the moment one bad game is over the sooner you want a chance to improve in the next. Luckily in the Canadian Football League you only have to wait a few days before you get that shot. Last week’s loss against Montreal was of course disappointing but also an opportunity to re-focus and get better.
